From the Artist: This is my first submission and I'm a new student. This was painted early morning to capture the sunlight. Photo was taken at night to show the set up. (I took the pic with camera phone but had problems.) I enjoyed the challenge but feel I can make improvements. I'm happy with the results but feel my flower is a little lonely. Suggestions please.

From the Painting Guide: You've got a lovely sense of the subtle color variations within the individual petals of the flower, and of the way they stretch into space. I think the flower feels lonely though because of the amount of space above and below it (compare it to the space on the sides). I think if you extended the stem off the bottom edge and added a leaf or two at the bottom, this would enable the flower to dominate the space, rather than being somewhat overwhelmed by it.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Shadow: Don't forget that flowers have shadows within themselves, for instance where petals overlap or prevent the light from falling on a part of the flower. This isn't necessarily very dark nor black; often it's only a slight change in tone. (Think "darker orange" rather than "black shadow".)
